How to Have a Clutter-free closet in three days

It can be done!

Feeling stressed or like you can’t organize your thoughts much less dinner?

Chances are there’s either mental or physical clutter getting in the way.

For me, when my house was cluttered and I couldn’t find things it led to me being stressed out, unproductive, and my sex drive in a slump.

Mama didn’t like that!

So I did what every smart woman would and worked my way down. 😉 No! Not that…That will come later. 

Clutter creates stress which affects ALL areas of your health and relationships. Take control of your clutter and your life!

Anytime is a great time to clear your clutter, especially new and like new items. We often have more than we need or use and donating is a great way to give back and place those things into the hands of someone who will actually utilize them.

Is clutter stressing you out? It doesn’t have to be this way!  We have so little time so I broke this down into small, achievable tasks.

Where do you begin?

If your closet is perfectly pristine begin with your child’s, guest, coat, or craft closet.

Once one space is cleared, move onto the next until all are done.


3 Days to a Clutter Free Closet

Day 1: Assess

Evaluate each closet in your home and choose which ones need to be organized. Download and complete the Closet Clutter Assessment Printable for each closet to get started.


This is the only task for day 1.

Be patient grasshopper. You will have work in the days to come.



Day 2: Prep Work

Now you know which closets need to be organized. Spend this day thinking about why your “stuff” is weighing you down or stressing you out.  Look for storage containers or storage space bags you already have around the house and gather them so you know where they are tomorrow. Each year I go through our holiday items and this frees up containers. This prep work will pay off!

  1. Does the space have too many things for the closet size? You may be finding items assigned to this closet all over the house because they don’t fit the area.
  2. Do you have items you’ve been “meaning” to get to and donate due to not using them or not fitting any longer? I’m a list maker so things stick in my head as “to do” and stress me out until I can cross them off.
  3. Are there local organizations you support who can use your items? Before my third daughter was born I would donate our clothes, books, backpacks and toys to a shelter for abused women and their children. I knew my donations went directly into their hands. Dress for Success or other organizations helping women transition to the workplace are wonderful for business attire, jewelry, handbags and other accessories that seem to multiply in our closets.

Day 3: Clean out the clutter

Start with the closet requiring the least amount of work. You will feel accomplished and be able to conquer more closets after you finish this one.

Look at your checklist and begin with the unchecked items and keep going until they’re all marked off. Play music that gets you moving. It’s so much more fun that way! Check out my playlist for motivation and tell me your favorite song. 

Doesn’t time seem to fly when you whistle while you work?

Have 3 bags ready to go and carry them from closet to closet:

  1. Garbage
  2. Donate
  3. I actually need this, use this, wear this, love this!

Place damaged, worn, and stained items in the garbage bag. Be honest with yourself. If you haven’t successfully removed the stain or repaired, it probably will not happen any time soon.  Clothing or accessories not used within 6 months, no longer fitting, or those you just have TOO MANY of go into your donate bag.

Things you NEED, USE, WEAR, and LOVE go into the I actually need this, use this, wear this, love this bag. It helps to have the closet clear to see your space and envision how to organize it.

Decide if the contents of your I actually need this, use this, wear this, love this bag belong and fit in this closet.

  • If yes, begin placing them into the space.
  • Items that need a different home follow you to the next space until the perfect landing spot is found.

Repeat these steps for each closet:

  • Throw away garbage bag so it’s out of the home and off your mind.
  • Put your donate bags in your car so you won’t forget them.
  • Drop off your donate items while running errands or in between pickups and activities.
  • Reward yourself for a job well done with a hot cup of tea or organic non-GMO coffee and your favorite book or celebrate with a spicy night in the bedroom. You’ll feel accomplished and empowered to keep going on to your next project!
