DIY or Buy: How to Make Fruit & Veggie Wash

When I first discovered GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms) I was horrified and threw anything and everything I thought was toxic away and it did NOT exactly go over well with the family. We eventually fell off the wagon because we couldn’t sustain the extreme changes I made. Now we have a happy medium and eat primarily unprocessed foods and indulge in fast food, ice cream, and restaurants every now and then.

While I don’t suggest you run out and spend a fortune at the store replacing your processed foods with whole ones, I encourage you to eat more greens, LESS CRAP, and more REAL Food. Along with your newfound healthy eating plan comes a slight learning curve for caring for all this yummy green goodness. 

At least it was for me.


I’ve shared before about GMOs and pesticides being used on our foods. If you’re new to cleaner eating, is a great starting point. Their Dirty Dozen and Clean 15 list will guide you in the 12 foods with highest use of pesticides and the 15 with the least amount so you can start little by little to avoid overwhelm.

Find what works for you to alleviate some of the pesticides, dirt, bugs, etc. You’ll want to see what type it is and some require more washing than others. 

You want to make sure everything is dry before you return it back to the fridge to maximize freshness.

Here’s a DIY Fruit & Veggie Wash for ones with skin. Here’s a few options if you’d rather BUY than DIY: Veggie Wash Organic  or Fit Organic 


DIY Fruit & Veggie Wash

Supplies Needed:

  • Spray bottle
  • 2 cups Cold Water
  • Measuring Cup
  • 2 tablespoons White Vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons Lemon Juice (you can use a few drops of essential oil if you don’t have fresh lemons)


  1. Measure ingredients
  2. Mix well
  3. Add into a spray bottle
  4. Squirt product a few times
  5. Let site for three to five minutes
  6. Rinse with water

Apple Cider Vinegar

ACV is a must have for your home. I’ve used it in salad dressings, on my scalp, face, and other areas of my body (another post for another time). 

You can use 1 part of apple cider vinegar to 10 part water and let your produce sit in the mixture for 5 minutes or so, give it a good scrub, rinse, and let it dry.

  • Water
  • Large Bowl
  • Vinegar


  1. Pour 4 parts water to 1 part plain white vinegar in a large bowl.
  2. Let fruit or veggies soak for 20 minutes.
  3. Rinse well and let dry.

So get in those greens and make sure they’re clean!
